Friday, September 16, 2011: An official team from Madhya Pradesh has
lauded the effective functioning of neighbourhood groups under the
‘Kudumbashree Mission’ aimed at women’s empowerment in Kerala.
“This is quite unique for Kerala.
The way neighbourhood groups are
converged with panchayats here is amazing,”the visiting delegation from
Madhya Pradesh Rural Livelihood Programme said after an interaction with
Kerala Panchayats Minister M K Muneer. Addressing the team, Muneer
said’special neighbourhood groups’would be constituted soon for
discussing issues related to differently-abled children.
The Madhya Pradesh team is visiting Kerala to learn about the success
stories of Kudumbashree projects. During the last three days, they had
visited many panchayats in Kollam, Alapuzha and Thiruvananthapuram
districts. Their itinerary included visiting the garment making units of
Kudumbashree from where goods of the brands ‘Napstar’and ‘Kadambari’
reach the markets.
Also, there are other neighbourhood groups engaged in micro-level and
macro-level enterprises.”Women groups are mostly into mid-day meal
programmes in Madhya Pradesh. But here we found them engaged in income
generating programmes which are worth replicating in our state,”said
Pankaj Ekka, District Project Officer of MPRLP, Mandla district.
Members of Samarthan-Centre for Development Support, an NGO that
works for participatory governance in MP, and district project officers
of MPRLP were among the team members.
