Plachimada bill: VS lashes out at Centre, State Govt

Friday, September 16, 2011: Opposition leader V S Achuthanandan today accused Central and state governments of trying to sabotage the bill passed by Kerala Assembly to set up a special tribunal to realise compensation from softdrink giant Coca Cola for alleged losses caused by its plant at Plachimada in Palakkad district.
Reacting to reports that the Centre had returned the bill to the state seeking clarifications, Achuthanandan said this was the result of a “conspiracy” by Congress-led governments at the Centre and the state to sabotage the state legislation.

He alleged that the Union Home Ministry had been delaying assent to the legislation on flisy grounds.
Kerala Assembly had unanimously passed the bill in February this year, when the LDF was in power, to set up a special tribunal to realise compensation from Hindustan Coca Cola Beverages Ltd for lossses its plant at Plachimada caused to the people.
The legislation was based on the recommendations of a high powered committee headed by a senior bureaucrat, which claimed that a huge loss of Rs 216.16 crore had been caused by the plant like agricultural loss and done environmental harm to the area.
