Court verdict on Soumya’s death case on October 31

Tuesday, October 25, 2011: The Thrissur Fast Track Court will on October 31st declare its verdict on a case relating to the death of a 23-year-old woman (Soumya) who was brutally raped after being pushed out of a moving train died at a private hospital in Thrissur on February 1.
Govinda Swami, the accused, had denied the charge against him. The Court would also pronounce its verdict on the plea against Dr Unmesh, an associate professor of the Department of Forensic Medicine, Thrissur Medical College, in connection with controversy over autopsy report of Soumya.

Soumya, hailing from Manjakkad near Shornur, was attacked on February 1 this year when she was travelling in the ladies compartment of a local train from Ernakulam to Shornur.

Govinda Swami, the accused entered the women’s compartment of the train, in which the victim, Soumya was traveling alone from the Vallathol Nagar railway station. The Police said that Govinda Swami tried to nab the woman’s bag. The woman resisted the attack and ran to the end of the compartment to escape him.
Govinda Swami pushed her out of the train and she fell down with her head banging on the rock. He also jumped out of the train, along with her and raped the severely injured woman.
Govinda Swami has been charged under IPC sections 307 (attempt to murder) and 326 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons or means), Police said. Soumya had died at a private hospital in Thrissur on Feb 6th.
The Police have submitted a chargesheet against Govinda Swami on April 19. The chargesheet was submitted by Narcotic cell DySP P Radhakrishnan before Wadakkancherry Judicial First Class Magistrate.
