Mullaperiyar in ecologically fragile zone: Report

Friday, May 25, 2012: The Madhav Gadgil Committee appointed by the Union Environment Ministry to study the biodiversity of the Western Ghats presented its report today.
The report states that the Mullaperiyar dam is situated in ecologically fragile zone. The report also suggests that Athirapally hydro electric project should not be given approval.
The report proposes to decommission all the dams which have existed for over 50 years in the ecologically fragile areas.
