India 214/3 ; Sachin falls short of ton, Sehwag crosses 8000
MELBOURNE: It was heartbreak for fans around the world as Sachin Tendulkar was clean bowled at a score of 73 runs, thereby prolonging the wait for his elusive 100th international ton.
The Little Maestro fell just before the end of the day’s play and India were finally 214/3 at stumps on Day 2, trailing by 119 runs.
Rahul Dravid (68*) was however unbeaten and would look to become the first Indian to score a ton in the series. Sachin and Dravid had slammed elegant fifties to bolster India against Australia. The centurion partnership took the total past the 200-run mark with both the class batsmen scoring runs aplenty. The two hit elegant drives and hooks to treat the audience to some sublime cricket.
Dashing opener Virender Sehwag became the fifth Indian batsman to complete 8000 runs in Test cricket when he reached an individual score of 20 against Australia in the first cricket Test at the MCG.
Before Sehwag, Sunil Gavaskar, Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman are the Indian players who have reached the coveted milestone. He is the 23rd batsman in history of Test cricket to complete 8000 Test runs.
Sehwag completed the feat in his 93rd Test match and by guiding Peter Siddle to deep fine leg.
Prior to the Melbourne Test match, Sehwag has hit 22 centuries at an average of over 52.
