Heavy rain likely for two more days in Kerala

Friday, September 02, 2011: Heavy rains lashed most parts of Kerala since last night due to vigorous monsoon activity, Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said.

However, no rail-related calamity or major property or crop loss was reported from anywhere, it said. Rain occurred at most places across Kerala and the Lakshadweep islands, IMD said.

Rain or thunder showers would occur at most places in Kerala till September 3, an IMD forecast said. Heavy to very heavy rainfall had been reported from Koilandy (14cm), Vadakara and Vaithri (12 cm each), both in north Kerala, during the 24 hours till 0830 hrs today.

Kozhikode and Ottappalam received 11 cm of rainfall and Vellanikkara, Mannarkkad, Thalassery and Thrissur 10 cm each, the forecast said.

Fishermen had been warned of strong onshore winds from westernly direction with speed occasionally reaching 45-55 kmph likely along and off Kerala coast and over Lakshadweep area during the next 24 hours, the forecast said.
