LDF hartal total in T’puram, hits normal life

Saturday, September 17, 2011: The dawn-to-dusk hartal organised by Left Democratic Front (LDF) as a protest against the police action on DYFI, SFI activists yesterday, caused considerable difficulties to the general public on Saturday.
Private buses, autorickshaws and taxis did not ply, putting commuters to hardship. Some people, however, used their cars and two-wheelers to go to officers and other places.
Several untoward incidents were reported in which group of unidentified persons pelted stones at KSRTC buses in the Pappanamcode, Venjaramoodu, Sreekaryam, Vattiyoorkkavu, Pangappara and Pulayanarkotta.

Government offices recorded thin attendance and all shops and establishments remained closed throughout the day. In many areas, the LDF activists forced the shopkeepers to down shutters. Police personnel were posted at junctions and important places to prevent untoward incidents.
Three government vehicles were torched yesterday as the protest by CPI-M’s youth wing DYFI against petrol price hike turned violent here.
Police also lathicharged and used water cannons as the protesters broke barricades and barged into the compound of the General Post Office in the city.
Government oil companies on Thursday hiked petrol price by Rs 3.14-3.32 per litre after decline in the rupee’s exchange value increased the cost of buying crude oil and widened losses from fuel sales.
