Tuesday, September 20, 2011: State government today said it would
reply to the clarification sought by the Centre over a bill to enact a
special tribunal ordering Coca Cola to pay a heavy compensation for
alleged losses caused by its plant at Plachimada.
“The government will soon reply to the Centre’s letter. But the
clarification sought should not be seen as an insult to the Assembly, as
alleged by certain quarters, “Chief Minister Oommen Chandy told
reporters during his cabinet briefing.
He also rejected reports that the Centre had returned the
bill.Opposition leader in the assembly V S Achuthanandan had recently
accused the Centre and state governments of trying to sabotage the bill.
The assembly had unanimously passed the bill in February 2011 when
LDF was in power, to set up a special tribunal to realise compensation
from Hindustan Coca Cola Beverages Ltd for ‘losses’ its plant caused to
the people at Plachimada in the Palakkad district.
