Heavy rain likely for two more days in Kerala

Sunday, November 27, 2011: Rains are likely to continue for the next two days with the low-pressure area that developed over Kanyakumari intensifying into a depression as it moved northwestwards and settled near the Thiruvananthapuram coast on Saturday.
The Regional Meteorological Centre has warned that squally weather with wind speeds reaching 60 km per hour was likely along the Kerala coast during the next 48 hours.
Rain or thundershowers will lash most places in Kerala, the forecast said. Isolated heavy or very heavy rainfall too has been forecast in the next 24 hours. The RMC says the sea conditions will remain ‘rough to very rough’.
“Fishermen are advised not to venture into open sea off Kerala coast and over Lakshadweep area,” the RMC warning says.
“The well marked low pressure area over Kanyakumari and neighbouring areas have now settled about 120 km southwest of Thiruvananthapuram and about 400 km east southeast of Lakshadweep Islands,” a top Met Department official said.
“The system is likely to move west northwestwards across Lakshadweep area and intensify into a deep depression during next 48 hours,” he added.
On Saturday, heavy rainfall was recorded on Saturday in Thiruvananthapuram, Munnar in Idukki, Kollengode in Palakkad, Enamackal in Thrissur and Haripad, Chengannur, Kayamkulam and Mavelikkara in Alappuzha.
