CM to lay foundation stone for Kariavattom Stadium on May 8


Friday, May 4, 2012: Chief minister Oommen Chandy will lay the foundation stone for the Kariavattom Outdoor Stadium on Tuesday.
The stadium will be the venue for the opening and closing ceremonies of the 35th National Games.
The first stadium in the country to be developed on DBOT (Design-build-operate- transfer) basis, the facility will have the capacity to seat 50,000 people, said sports minister K.B.Ganesh Kumar
The rough estimate of the project is Rs 161 crore. The date of the National Games will be announced after the stadium is completed.
The proposed stadium will come up on 37 acres of land belonging to the Kerala University. The stadium can be used for football and cricket matches.
It is designed as a self-sustaining model, with a convention centre, exhibition hall, restaurant, club house, and swimming pools. It will have facilities for indoor games and will provide retail space and parking facilities.
