Plea to bring to book accused in scribe attack case

Saturday, May 12, 2012: Kerala Union of Working Journalists (KUWJ) today urged Chief Minister Oommen Chandy to ensure that those behind the brutal attack on Mathrubhumi reporter VB Unnithan, should be brought to book as early as possible.
Alleging that a section of police officers was trying to scuttle the probe, KUWJ state President KC Rajagopal and General Secretary, Manoharan Morayi told reporters here that Chief minister and Home minister, Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan should see that such efforts did not succeed. Crime branch and local police had at first investigated the case, which was later handed over to CBI.
Since many police personnel were allegedly involved, investigation in the case was lagging following which the KUWJ had urged chief minister to order CBI probe, they said. Two crime branch DYSPs– Santosh Nair and Abdul Rasheed were among those arrested so far in the case. Unnithan was attacked in April last year for filing a report on a booze party organised by a toddy contractor in which four police officers took party.
