Shadow Police to get new ‘look’

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Shadow Police wing of the city police will soon undergo a major restructuring. The top echelons have agreed to the proposal for assembling all the Shadow Policemen under the district headquarters and monitoring the functioning of the wing by the Deputy Commissioner.
The decision was taken in the light of allegations that the police administration is toying with the idea of winding up the operations of the special wing, which was constituted for a single purpose - keeping a tab on crime and criminals.
Though the officials are yet to announce the exact date on which the reformation will come into effect, it is learnt that preliminary paper works have begun.
From the first day of its inception, the wing has been working under the control of the superior officers of the likes of Commissioner, Deputy Commissioner and Assistant Commissioners. The selected policemen attached with particular stations have been working in their respective areas on  criminal cases. But manpower crunch soon began casting its shadow over the working of the wing.
It was in this context that the police officers decided to restructure the wing by bringing in able-police personnel from various stations. These recruits would be detached from their mother stations and put under the district headquarters unit. The manpower deficit in the concerned stations would be filled by deploying police personnel from AR camp.
City Police Commissioner T J Jose came down heavily on a section of the media which had reported that the police had decided to disband the Shadow Police wing. ”There is not an iota of truth in those reports. The Shadow Police team has been performing well and we are even thinking of strengthening it. We also have decided to weed out those who are incompetent and fill the void by recruiting able and interested people from the city stations,” he said.
