Kerala firm on new dam at Mullaperiyar, says CM

Tuesday, December 06, 2011: Chief Minister Oommen Chandy today informed that Kerala would remain firm on its twin demands, decreasing the storage capacity of the Mullaperiyar dam to below 136 feet with immediate effect and constructing a new dam within a stipulated time frame.
Chief Minister was speaking to the reporters after the all-party meeting held here on Tuesday to discuss on the Mullaperiyar issue which has seen Kerala and Tamil Nadu at loggerheads.
The opposition has demanded action against Advocate general KP Danadapani who made statements before the Kerala High Court against the interests of the state.
Chandy has appealed to those protesting in Kerala to refrain from doing anything that would ignite further tensions between Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Tamil Nadu has accused Kerala of being alarmist by alleging that the 116-year-old reservoir has been rendered unsafe by numerous quakes.
The dispute has escalated with Kerala government hardening its stand to demand construction of a new dam and Tamil Nadu reiterating its stand that the retrofitted existing dam is similar to a new dam.
