KOCHI: Stray dogs also have the right to live like human beings and their killing won’t be allowed – actress and TV anchor Ranjini Haridas made a point of this when she verbally fought with many people’s representatives and officials, who had gathered at District Panchayat Priyadarshini hall here to attend a meeting called by Ernakulam District Panchayat to discuss ways to tackle “stray dog menace”.
The meeting was convened by District Panchayat president Eldhose Kunnappilly. About hundred persons including District local self-governing body presidents, Animal Welfare department officials and animal rights activists attended the meeting.
When someone spoke favouring the killing of stray dogs, Ranjini snatched the mic from him and vehemently proved her point.
“Killing dogs is illegal. Instead of conducting ABC (Animal Birth Control) programme, clamouring for killing them is not right. If stray dogs are multiplying, blame it on the inefficiency of chiefs in local self governing institutions to conduct ABD programme and clear roads of garbage,” said Ranjini, irking Panchayat presidents.
When the people’s representatives insisted that dogs sould be killed, Ranjini with the backing of other animal lovers turned against them. The war of words ensued and pachayat presidents soon left the hall in a huff.
Later, Ranjini gave a complaint to District Collector against illegal killing of stray dogs. She later told the media that she had not got any response from the collector till then.
