World's biggest floral carpet, tent set up at Kannur

The World s biggest Pookalam of 20,000 sq ft (floral carpet) and biggest Pandhal of 40,000 sq ft (tent) with out pillars were set up Saturday . The Giant Pookalam, which was designed by Sasikala, an artiste of Kannur, measures 20,000 sq ft was created with 20 tonnes of flowers within 45 minutes by around 1500 people mainly NCC, NSS, Scouts and guides, junior red cross, college and school students, including girls and Kudumbasree woman.

The organisers was supposed to be finished by taking two hours, but with the well coordination between the oraganisers it took only 45 minutes, between 1130hrs to 1215 hrs. Seven varities of 20 tonnes of flowers imported from Mysore and Tamil Nadu were used to make the carpet. The seven flowers represented seven continents of the world. The design, which took inspiration from the graphics elements of Theeyam, also a image of pigeon at the centre and was surrounded by a human-chain representing the element of harmony of Kannur, organisers said. 

The organisers claimed that they have done the on-the-spot video recording from the begining to end for the Guinnes Book of records and Limca Book of records authorities to asses and their certificates will be received on later, said Abdul Salam. The previous records was 15,000 sq ft Pookalam at Kozhikode in 2010 and 12000 sq ft at Kochi in 2008. Meanwhile, the pandal records measued only 14,500 sq ft in Kochi.
