A Medical College soon at Palakkad


PALAKKAD: The Health Department and the Scheduled Castes Welfare Department will set up a medical college in Palakkad, according to  A P Anil Kumar, Minister for Welfare of Scheduled Castes and Backward Communities.
The minister said that a sum of `50 crore has been allotted towards the preliminary works. The work will begin as and when the land is identified, he said.
He said that a meeting was convened by Chief Minister Oommen Chandy in which the officials of the Health Department participated in Thiruvananthapuram. Initially the facilities at the District Hospital would be utilised for the medical college. It has been proposed to begin classes in the next academic year. A special officer will be posted in the district in this regard.
The minister said that funds would not be a constraint for the medical college being executed by the Scheduled Castes Welfare Department. He said that the government proposed to make the medical college one of the best academic institutions in the country.
Amil Kumar said the medical college in Palakkad is the gift of the UDF Government as part of the first anniversary celebrations.
There are already residential schools under the Department. There were demands for setting up professional colleges also under the department.
Among those who were present in the press conference included Shafi Parambil and K Achuthan MLAs and District Collector Ali Asghar Pasha.
