Quality check on tanker lorries

KOCHI: The registration procedures for the tanker lorries that supply potable water in the city will begin on Thursday.
The civic body is making the registration of tanker lorries mandatory according to the instructions of the state government to ensure purity of potable water supplied.
“The permit of those lorries that did not register with the Corporation will be cancelled. The registration procedures should be completed by May 20,” said Mayor Tony Chammany.
A special meeting in this regard was held at  the Mayor’s chamber on Wednesday.
The office-bearers of Tanker Lorry Owners Welfare Association, Kerala Water Authority (KWA) officials and the District Medical Office authorities attended the meeting.
The water tanker lorries should be painted blue.
The Mayor instructed the officials concerned to ensure that the water from KWA sources is mainly used for the supply.
The water should be mainly taken from the tanks of KWA at Thammanam, Aluva, Muppathadam and Choondi.
“However, water from the KWA sources alone will not be sufficient to meet the requirements of the city. The remaining can be taken from other fresh water sources. However, the quality of the water taken from other sources should be tested by the Health Department,” Chammany said.
The Mayor said that if the water supplied is impure, stringent action will be taken against them.
“The next meeting on potable water supply will be convened before May 20,” he added.
