High Court slams State Govt over Mullaperiyar row
December 02, 2011: The Kerala High Court today lashed out at the State government in connection with the Mullaperiyar dam issue which has seen Kerala and Tamil Nadu at loggerheads.
The High Court directed the government to give clear cut information about the previous and the present water level in the 116-year-old reservoir. The government has been directed to inform about the water level in the Idukki, Kulamavu and Cheruthoni dams.
Meanwhile the water level which crossed the maximum permissible storage limit of 136 ft in the Mullaperiyar dam on Sunday has risen to 136.6 ft.
Even though the capacity of the dam is 155 ft, only 136 ft are permitted to store. With the rise in the water level, excess water is being flowed to Idukki reservoir via Periyar through 13 spillways.
The district collector had issued a high alert to those living on the banks of the Periyar River. The indefinite fast staged by Peerumedu MLA E S Bijimol seeking an immediate solution for the Mullaperiyar issue is still continuing.
