Mullaperiyar row: OommenChandy to meet PM today
Friday, 02 December 2011: Chief Minister Oommen Chandy today will meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh other Central leaders to drum up support for the construction of a new dam in place of the 116-year-old Mullaperiyar reservoir, citing safety concerns.
Meanwhile Tamil Nadu Government yesterday filed a plea in Supreme Court. It has petitioned that “The Kerala Government is spreading panic among the public about the safety of the Mullaperiyar Dam which is not true.
Chief Minister Oommen Chandy on Thursday wrote a letter to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa in connection with the Mullaperiyar issue.
In the letter, it is stated that the water level in the dam should be lowered to 120 feet immediately. Chandy had said that Kerala’s demand for new dam at Mullaperiyar is genuine and the state cannot afford to soften its stand on the issue as it concerns the lives of nearly 35 lakh people.
Chandy added that the State Government cannot remain a mute spectator to the growing threat over the strength of the 116-year-old dam.
