CHENNAI: Reminding colleges and universities of schemes announced in July 2010, vice-chancellor of the University of Madras, Col Dr V Thiruvasagam said that the measures were still in place to promote the Tamil language. Speaking at a state-level conference on how to empower marginalised college students whose medium of education was their mother tongue, the VC said that the affiliation fee would be waived for any course with the medium of instruction as Tamil.
So far, about 14 colleges have availed this facility, he said, urging more colleges to come forward and start Tamil medium courses for the benefit of the students.
“We have generated knowledge in abundance.
But when the student is not entirely employable, he is not effective in his job. If the student is comfortable in learning in his mother tongue, be it physics, chemistry or any other subject, he should be encouraged to do it,” said Dr Thiruvasagam, addressing the students and professors from across the state, gathered at Guru Nanak College. He added that the university would help in preparing adequate course material for the Tamil medium courses.
He also reminded the audience of the other incentives offered by the university.
“PhD students who submit a Tamil translation of their thesis along with the English version will be given Rs 20,000. Those who complete their thesis in Tamil will be given a monthly stipend of Rs 5,000,” he said, hoping that there would be more beneficiaries under these schemes to promote a love for the language.
