School Teachers, Write TET, or lose your job

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: All the 1,67,000 school teachers in Kerala have to attend the Teachers Eligibility Test (TET), the state government ordered on Thursday. If they fail to attend the test, they would lose their job.

The new order comes in the light of the implementation of Right to Education Act. At first the test was meant for newly appointed teachers, but the test has been made mandatory for all teachers in Kerala. The test, the duration of which may be two or three hours, will be conducted by SCERT. Those who pass the test can retain their jobs.

The state government’s order has angered various teachers’ organizations irrespective of their political inclinations. KSTA (Kerala School Teachers’ Association) members has proclaimed that they would burn the copies of the order in front of Secretariat at 12.30 pm. GSTU (Government School Teachers’ Union) also blamed the government order and alleged that it was part of a conspiracy by education minister for appointing headmasters who are ineligible.
