Gold smuggling: SIs’ share is 'Rs 50,000 per kg'

KOCHI: The CBI has started primary investigation into Thursday’s gold haul at Nedumbassery airport. It has now become clear that Emigration SIs Manu and Ijaz, who were arrested in the day, have close link with smugglers.

For facilitating one kilogram gold, they allegedly got Rs 50,000 as commission. By now, they have taken a huge amount as commission. Even they are said to have gone on foreign tours with the accused in the gold smuggling case. Their bank accounts will be frozen. The gold smuggled to Kerala  thus are sold to jewelleries. The officials have also been able to trace the jewellers to whom the gold have been sold.

Meanwhile, even after Central Intelligence Agency taking over the Emigration department, illegal deals have been going on in the department. The department, which was under State police department, was brought under Bureau of Emigration, a wing of the Central Intelligence agency, after incidents of human trafficking were reported at airports in Kerala.
