Vizhinjam firing: Official of commandant rank will conduct inquiry

KOCHI: Coast Gurad in a press statement has said that the incident in which fishermen’s boat at Vizhinjam was fired at  will be probed by an official of Commandant rank. The main fact to be found out is whether there were circumstances then that demanded firing. The instruction is to submit report within January 24. Coast Guard also added that further action from its part will be taken after submitting the report.   

The incident happened on Monday at around 4 pm near the Vizhinjam coast between Bheemapally and Shankumukham.
The boat ‘Rishika’ with Alappuzha registration was going towards Kollam to Kanyakumari with the catch. When the boat reached Shangumukham, officials in a patrol boat of Vizhinjam Coast Guard gave instruction to stop the boat for inspection. But as the boat didn’t obey the instruction, the officials fired at the boat.

The officials said that though seven warning gun shots were fired in the sky, the boat didn’t stop. Following this, gunfire was shot at the bottom part of the boat. In the firing Clinton (22) and Subin (20), natives of Thakkala, had been injured.
