Dileep files defamation suit against English daily; demands Rs 50 cr compensation

KOCHI:  Actor Dileep has filed a defamation suit against The Times of India, demanding a compensation of Rs 50 crore. The case was filed against the paper for publishing a news item that said that the Dileep’s multiplex at Chalakkudy is being built on illegally acquired land.

In the notice it is said that if the company didn’t respond within  ten days, he would further the legal course. “The newspaper, which is trying to expand its popularity in Kerala , has not shown the basic ethics that is expected from a good newspaper. The news item was published without examining the facts and documents. The damage the news report has inflicted on my reputation is beyond repair,” Dileep said in the notice sent through senior high court advocate K Ram Kumar.

According to the news report, the land on which the multiplex is being built belonged to erstwhile royal family. In revenue records it has been marked as excess land.

But in the notice it is mentioned that the government had records to prove that in 2006, Dileep brought 92.9 cent land from Biju Philip, Augustine Paul and Saji. The Thrissur collector had also reported that it was not revenue land.
