Kolencherry dispute: Plea seeking status quo dismissed

Wednesday, September 21, 2011: The Kerala High Court on Tuesday denied a petition by the Jacobite faction of Malankara Jacobite Syrian church asking for maintaining the status quo of rights at the disputed church in Kolencherry.
The Jacobite and Orthodox factions are fighting for the ownership of the Kolencherry St Peters’and St Paul’s church. The fresh round of troubles began a week ago after the Jacobites were allegedly denied permission to enter the chapel to offer evening prayers by the Orthodox faction.
Following this, both the factions took their fight to the streets, with the district administration imposing prevention of unlawful assembly to maintain law and order in the area.
The new petition was filed after two rounds of negotiation to get the two feuding factions compromise failed.
