Metro Rail: Land owners meet CM for fair price


KOCHI: A delegation of nearly 60 land owners to be affected by the Kochi Metro Rail-related land acquisition drive along Banerjee Road and the road from Jose Junction to Ernakulam South Railway station, along with Hibi Eden MLA, met Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, on Saturday.
The meeting was held regarding the fixing of land price under the project.
The delegation stated that the price of Rs 32 lakh (including Solacium) fixed by the District Purchasing Committee under Collector Sheik Pareeth is negligible compared to the current market price.
They added that the price of the land should be fixed at a minimum of `1 crore per cent.
They also said that the people who would lose their livelihood in the process should be provided with new jobs or suitable rehabilitation.
Consequently, Oommen Chandy instructed the Collector to see to it that the land price should be fixed in accordance with the market price and that the land acquisition should commence only after settling the full amount to the owners.
Chandy also said that the authorities should also consider providing proper rehabilitation or jobs to those who would lose their livelihood in the process.
The Chief Minister also instructed Sheik Pareeth to consider relaxing the building norms for the constructions that are to take place on the acquired land.
