Announcing the bus fare hike to reporters after a cabinet meeting here, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said that distance of the first fare stage has also been increased from 2.5km to 5km for ordinary and fast passenger buses. There is no increase in the fare concession for students, one of the main demands of the Private Bus Operators Federation, Chandy said.
Government took the decision based on the report of the committee appointed by the previous LDF government that looked into the various demands of the Bus Operators, Chandy added. The new bus fares would come into effect from August 8, he said.
