Tuesday, August 30, 2011: The land of looms, lores and Folklore - Kannur is all set to host a 20,000 square feet ‘Pookalam — likely to be the world’s largest floral carpet.
Twenty tonnes of flowers will be used for the floral carpet, said MK Abdul Salam, one of the organisers of the event, told reporters. He said that the ‘pookalam’ would be set up on September 17 at Kannur Collectorate ground.
About 1,500 Youths including students and NCC, NSS, college clubs and public would create the ‘pookalam’.
The floral ‘artistes’ will have two hours to take a shot at the record into the Guinness Book of Records and Limca Book of Records. A total of 20 tonnes of flowers will be brought from Mysore and Tamil Nadu to make the ‘Pookalam’ at an estimated cost of Rs 16 lakh.
The ‘Pookalam’ would be symbolic of seven continents and seven colours. The previous record was a 15000 square feet Pookalam at Kozhikode in 2010 and 12000 square feet at Ernakulam in 2008.
The organisers have contacted the Guinness Book authorities at London to make an on-the-spot assessment of the flower carpet.
