Women Power in Law Colleges


THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Department of Law of Kerala University here on Friday organised a felicitation to the principals of the Law Colleges in the state. The reason for the felicitation was that all of them were women, a phenomenon that has occurred for the first time in history, ever since legal education was introduced in the state 133 years ago.

The principals are, S Usha of Government Law College, Thiruvananthapuram, A Prasanna, Principal on deputation to IMG, A S Saroja, GLC, Ernakulam, Mercy Thekkekara, GLC, Thrissur, Lovely Paulose, GLC, Kozhikode and Lekshmi Nair, the principal of self-financing Kerala Law Academy Law College, Thiruvananthapuram. All of them, except Lovely Paulose, the principal of Government Law College, Kozhikode, were present on the occasion.
"Soon, a situation will arise when men would have to rely on reservations to be a part of the legal teaching fraternity in the state,’’ said M K Bhandari, Professor of Law, JNV University at Jodhpur in Rajasthan, addressing the gathering.
He was referring to the surge of women in the legal field, which was otherwise dominated by their male counterparts for decades. He also said that women have outnumbered men in the academic aspect of law, which is a positive sign for more women to venture into the field, unfazed by male dominance.
Bhandari, along with V P Magotra, the Dean of Department of Law, University of Jammu and B S Nirmal, Professor of Law, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, distributed the mementos to the woman principals.
The felicitation was organised as part of the three-day national seminar being organised by the Department of Law on New Genetic Technologies and Human Rights. The Head of the Department of Law of Kerala University, K C Sunny, presided over the function.
