Three locals' statements give new twist to probe :death of Sister Mary

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Giving a new twist to the probe into the death of Sister Mary Ancy at Fathima Holy Spirit convent, Poonkulam, the Vizhinjam police on Sunday recorded the statements of three local residents who claimed to have seen two persons, including a policeman, coming out of the compound of the convent barely two hours before Sister Mary Ancy was found dead inside the water tank at the convent.

The local residents, Sasi, a grocery shop owner, Appu, a headload worker, and Santhosh Kumar, a cleaner of a lorry, identified the two men as Eugene, a policeman attached to Vizhinjam coastal police station and Vijayan, a last grade employee at the Public Works Department.
Police have also recorded the statements of Eugene and Vijayan.   According to police, both of them were committee members of the Fathima Holy Cross Church and they had come to the church to water the concrete building which was newly constructed as part of the renovation works going on there.
Police  also said that though the church and convent were situated near to each other, both of them were separated by a wall and had different entrances. However, the local people alleged that the police were trying to downplay the whole incident. Local politician K Madhu said that Eugene had not mentioned his presence at the convent on that day when his statement was recorded for the first time.
Social activist Jomon Puthenpurackal said that the fresh revelation had strengthened the suspicion of murder contrary to the police claim of a suicide. He also demanded that the probe be handed over to Crime Branch or the CBI.
