Paravur sex scandal: HC grants bail to 16 accused

Monday, August 29, 2011: The Kerala High Court has today granted bail to sixteen accused in the sensational Paravur sex scandal case in which a minor girl was sexually exploited by many including her own father by promising her role in films.
As many as 83 persons have been arrested so far in connection with the case, crime branch officials told. Those arrested earlier include the girl’s father, a filmmaker, an actor, a police official, politicians, a contractor and several government employees.

Meanwhile an identification parade of the accused was held at the Viyyoor Central Jail on Saturday. The identification parade was held in the presence of the Perumbavoor judicial Magistrate.
The Crime Branch officials informed that the girl had identified all the seven persons who were paraded. The sexual abuse of the 14-year-old girl came to light three months ago after her mother lodged a complaint before the police submitting that her husband had forcibly taken the daughter to prostitution.
Based on the submissions made by the girl and the mother, the police registered a case and launched a probe.
Though the police were able to arrest a few persons, including the girl’s father and mother in connection with the case, the government handed over the investigation to Crime Branch after there were allegations that the police were trying to help a few high-profile persons belonging to film industry.
