KOCHI: The Kerala High Court has appointed an Advocate Commission to find a remedy for the never-ending menace of septic tank waste in Kochi city. Advocate Subhash Chand, the Commission, has to submit the report within a month. Advocate S Rajeev, counsel for Clean Kerala Welfare Association secretary P S Shameer, submitted before the court that a Sharjah-based private company ‘Aquakem Engineers’ would provide services for implementing projects within the Kochi Corporation. “The company would provide waste treatment plants on a rental basis and the corporation can make use of it,” he submitted. A Division Bench comprising Justice C N Ramachandran Nair and Justice P S Gopinathan recorded the submissions and appointed the commission.
Shameer, an impleading petitioner, made the submission on a Public Interest Litigation filed by Advocate Sudha who sought a directive to ensure zero discharge of effluents to the Munnar river, Periyar river, Pambanar and the Chinnar from resorts, hotels and restaurants situated in and around Munnar.
According to Shameer, only 40 cents of property is required to construct a plant. He further submitted that during rainy season, due to water logging, the septic tanks in the residential areas of the city usually leak unless it is properly cleansed.
