Wednesday, September 14, 2011: The Kerala government on Wednesday ordered an inquiry by medical experts into the death of a migrant worker from Orissa allegedly due to medical negligence in the Government Medical College Hospital in Kottayam last week.
Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said that the probe by a panel of three doctors was ordered on the basis of a preliminary report submitted by the Director of Medical Education on the incident.
Seettu, an 18-year-old labourer from Orissa, died in the hospital, where he was admitted with injuries suffered during a road accident on September 6. The next day he was shifted to the ward where he was found being administered artificial respiration using the equipment by a by-stander of a patient, instead of the paramedical staff of the hospital. He died the same night.
The shocking incident came to light with a Malayalam TV channel airing visuals of the incident.
The Chief Minister said the doctors and officials responsible for the incident would be known only on getting the probe report.
The inquiry panel, headed by Dr Usha Kumari of MCH, Thiruvananthapuram, was also asked to submit proposals on improving the medical care in ICUs and CCUs in government MCHs.
