SC flays Kerala for illegal worship places

New Delhi: The apex court on Tuesday flayed the state government for not evicting illegal worship places constructed encroaching public roads. The bench comprising Justice Dalvir Bhandari and Deepak Varma was not ready to accept state's claim that the worship places were not evacuated due to prevailing assembly elections. The bench asked the government to submit a report on this within three weeks.

When the case was considered in September 2010, the court asked to frame a policy for evicting illegal worship places within a month. But states including Kerala failed on this and in the affidavit submitted by the newly formed government in SC, it was stated that there are 910 illegal worship places and only three were removed. The court did not pay heed to the demand of the state for 6 months time to evict them.
