Soorya Festival begins today

Wednesday, September 21, 2011: Soorya Festival, touted as one of the longest cultural extravaganza in the world, will commence here on Wednesday.
Mayor K Chandrika will inaugurate the festival at Kalabhavan at 6.45 pm. The festival will start with a contemporary dance performance by dance troupe Samudra. Following this, ‘Electra’ directed by Shyamaprasad will be screened.
The highlight of the festival this year is film festival, dance and music festival, drama festival, video fest, painting exhibition and talk fest. Renowned artistes from all over the country will perform in the city.

Singer KJ Yesudas and danseuse Padma Subrahmaniam, who have been participating in the festival for the last 33 years, will perform this year as well. Singers Unnikrishnan and OS Arun and dancers Priyadarshini Govind, Rama Vaidyanathan, Shobhana, and Lakshmi Gopalaswami are among the other prominent artistes who will perform at this year’s festival to be held at the Panchayat Association Hall.
The painting exhibition to be held from September 22 to November 20 at Kalabhavan, will showcase works of artists Deepa Sujith, Leesha Anurag, Kanchana Manilal, and Anil Karoor. From September 28 to 31 ‘Muttathe Mulla,’ an initiative to encourage young talents from the State will be held.
The drama festival will begin with the staging of 12 dramas directed by Soorya Krishnamoorthy.
A host of other contemporary plays will also be staged as part of the festival which will be held from October 11 to 20 at the Hassan Marikkar Hall. The Thiruvananthapuram edition of the festival will conclude on January 10, 2012.
