NSS, SNDP to go hand in hand

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Nair Service Society (NSS) and Shree Narayana Dharma Paripalana (SNDP) Yogam on Wednesday decided to go hand in hand with each other in their protest against the alleged “hijacking” of the Congress-led UDF Government by the Muslim League.

The decision on this was first declared by NSS general secretary G. Sukumaran Nair. He said to media persons that he had telephoned SNDP Yogam general secretary Vellappally Natesan and settled all the misunderstandings between them. Later, Vellappally Natesan appeared before the news persons and reiterated the same.

Both of them resorted to criticize the UDF government’s move to give aided status to 35 schools in Malappuram.

Sukumaran Nair said that the Chief Minister’s office and the State Secretariat would have to be transplanted to Malappuram, known as the stronghold of the Muslim League, the second largest constituent of the ruling coalition. Meanwhile, Vellappally Natesan said the League was plundering public resources.

In the assembly on  Wednesday, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy revised a statement he made the previous day, allegedly under Muslim League pressure, to agree with its proposal to include 35 schools in Muslim-majority Malappuram district in the aided sector. He himself had said in the Assembly on Tuesday that no decision had been taken in this regard.

Opposition LDF stalled proceedings in the assembly following this. Opposition leader V S Achuthanandhan demanded ouster of education Minister P K Abdu Rabb in connection with the issue.

VS also demanded to cancel the aided approval given to those schools. He sought an explanation from the Chief Minister Oommen Chandy regarding the issue.

Achuthanandan said that Chandy revised his stand by bowing to the Muslim League’s pressure. “How many Chief Ministers does Kerala have? Is it that there is one for the Congress and another for the Muslim League?” he asked before announcing the decision for walkout.
