The arrest of Abu Jundal, one of the suspects in the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, has confirmed that there was state support from across the border, Union Home Minister P Chidambaram said here on Wednesday.
“He has confessed that he was in the control room at the time of the Mumbai strike,” Chidambaram told mediapersons, but maintained that nothing more could be divulged now and more details would be shared only with the courts.
India had been tracking Abu Jundal for nearly a year, he disclosed. “But it was under a pseudonym. We identified him. But the media did not,’’ he said.
Abu Jundal, 30, was arrested in New Delhi on June 21 after his deportation from Saudi Arabia.
“The confession of Jundal shows that there was state support and there were state actors. At the moment, we are not pointing fingers at anyone,” said Chidambaram.
To a query whether underworld don Dawood Ibrahim is also stationed in Pakistan, he just smiled. “Pakistan flatly denies it,” he said.
On whether the arrest has anything to do with Pakistan’s faux pas on the release of Sarabjit Singh, he said, “it may be due to some hiccup in Pakistan.”
‘’Pakistan is a country of denial. We’ll track everyone, every single mastermind and accomplice involved in the 26/11 attack. We’ll apprehend them when there is an opportunity,” he asserted.
Chidambaram said the world had appreciated the restraint and resolve shown by India while handling the 26/11 attack.
Chidambaram, along with Union Law and Justice Minister Salman Khurshid and I&B Minister Ambika Soni, was briefing the media on the achievements of the UPA government at the Centre marking its third year of completion in office.
