‘Terror outfits mostly fundamentalist groups’

Though we can say that terrorism has no religion, the fact remains that terrorism draws inspiration out of religions, opined Union Home Minister P Chidambaram here on Thursday.

He also said that while terrorism was mostly a transborder phenomenon in India till 2008, homegrown terrorism has also emerged which is even being taken out of the country now.

Inaugurating a seminar on ‘Threats of Terrorism - Impact of Development’ organised by the KPCC-sponsored Institute of Social Research and Action (ISRA) here on Thursday, he said that most of the terror groups are fundamentalist groups. With the advent of modern technology,  terrorists are using internet to spread their radical beliefs and develop networks.

He said that traditional policing methods though good, were not enough to tackle the modern-day challenges from terrorism. He said that it was a myth there was no  terrorist attacks in the United States after 9/11.

‘’There was six terrorist attacks of which three were successful,’’he noted.

The only way to keep terrorism at bay was the constant vigil of society and not allowing fanatics and extremists to ttract  youth, he said.

KPCC president Ramesh Chennithala presided over the function.

Union Law and Justice Minister Salman Khurshid, who was the chief guest, also delivered the keynote address.

Institute of Social Research and Action secretary Pazhakulam Madhu welcomed the gathering.

Home Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan, ISRA patron Sunder Menon and director Ranjith Balan also spoke on the occasion.
