Nipah: Two suspects also test negative; feeling relieved, says health minister

KOCHI: Health Minister K K Shailaja has said two more persons who were under observation for keeping close contact with a Nipah patient have tested negative for the viral infection.

“The test result of one more person will be received today and it’s a great relief that these people were able to survive the disease. Experts have already started attempts to find out the source of Nipah,” he said.

The minister said there was no need for anxiety over Nipah viral infection in the current circumstances in the State. “The samples of two persons who stayed near the patient are negative. After this, samples of eight more persons tending to patients were found to be negative,” the minister clarified.

Meanwhile, the blood and discharge from the student who is under treatment for Nipah in Kalamassery Medical College will be tested again.

Experts from Pune lab will test the samples in the specially arranged facility in Kalamassery Medical College. The information available is that the result will be available by noon. The test is being done to find out whether the Nipah virus has subsided completely in the State.

According to the information available from hospital, there is a substantial improvement in the condition of student, who is under treatment for Nipah.
