Saturday, September 24, 2011: Congress-ruled Kerala had criticised the Planning Commission’s submission before the Supreme Court that people spending more than Rs 32 a day in urban and 25 a day in rural areas would be ineligible to get the benefits given to BPL families.
Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, who is also a senior Congress leader, wondered how a person can spend a day with such a meagre amount in the prevailing financial situation in the country. “I will not agree. In the present economic situation, how can a person live with Rs 25. No, I cannot agree with it,” he told reporters reacting to a query on the Planning Commission’s proposal.
