High Court upholds validity of Singur land act

Wednesday, September 28, 2011: As a huge victory for West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, the Singur Land Rehabilitation and Development Act was today upheld by the Calcutta High Court.
The Act was constitutional and valid, said the High Court. It said the act provided sufficient public purpose. Court stayed the judgement till November 2 for allowing anyone aggrieved with the order an opportunity to appeal.

The court appointed Hooghly DM and SP as special officers to oversee smooth transfer of land from Tatas to West Bengal government in two months.
Banerjee in October 2006 launched an agitation against the construction of the Singur plant of Tata Motors. On December 4 2006, she went on an indefinite strike.
The Tatas can claim compensation for damages, if any, before the district judge who would have to give a decision within six months, the court said.
Tata Motors, which was forced to rule out the Singur plant that was built for making of its car Nano, had challenged the constitutional validity of the act.
The Tatas are likely to go to higher courts in the case, sources said.
