Opposition stalls Assembly proceedings

Monday, September 26, 2011: The CPI(M)-led LDF opposition disrupted proceedings in the Kerala Assembly today on the issue of a vigilance court judge recusing himself from hearing the politically-sensitive palmolein case.
Led by CPI(M) stalwart V S Achuthanandan, the opposition demanded the resignation of Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, accusing the Congress-led UDF Government of coming in the way of judicial processes.
As the opposition members rushed to the well of the House and kept on shouting slogans during the zero hour, Speaker G Karthikeyan adjourned the House and called the floor leaders from both sides to find a way for resuming the proceedings through talks.
Refuting the LDF charge, Chandy said the government had never come in the way of judiciary’s independent functioning and that the opposition need not entertain any hope that the government could be weakened by pressure tactics.
The issue was raised through an adjournment notice by Deputy Leader of CPI(M) , who argued that the allegations raised by Government Chief Whip P C George against the Vigilance judge P K Haneefa formed part of a strategy to place hurdles in the way of the case, in which Chandy himself had come under the shadow.
Rejecting this contention, Chandy said George had only exercised his right as citizen to air his personal views about the judge.
In a suo motu decision, Haneefa, who had ordered investigation into the role of Oommen Chandy in the 1992 palmolein import case, had on Saturday recused himself from further hearing of the case regretting personal attack against him through the media.
