January 03, 2012: Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) bus services from Kumily to Tamil Nadu that remained suspended owing to stray incidents of violence on either side owing to the Mullaperiyar dam issue resumed after a gap of almost 27 days.
The bus services were partially stopped as a result of the ongoing commotion in connection with the Mullaperiyar dam issue which has seen Kerala and Tamil Nadu at loggerheads.
Official sources said buses were being operated with police escort. Similarly, transportation of essential commodities and other goods from Tamil Nadu to Kerala remains suspended in view of stiff resistance from the locals.
The vehicles carrying Sabarimala pilgrims and tourists were allowed to cross the inter-State border after a thorough check up from both sides. Private vehicles like Jeeps and vans started their operations up to Cumbum Mettu and Bodi Mettu, the two other prime roads connecting Kerala with Tamil Nadu in Theni district to bring back Tamil labourers working in Kerala estates.
Earlier, the district administration held peace talks with the locals and sought their cooperation to resume bus service up to the border.
