Tuesday, January 3, 2012: The loss on the first day of the New Year due to the heavy and incessant rains that lashed the capital city is estimated to be Rs 20 crore. The exact figure will be known only in the coming days.
As many as 1640 houses were destroyed due to rains. 178 houses were completely damaged and 1462 houses were partly destroyed. The capital city bore the brunt of the loss due to this.
Over 60 houses were completely destroyed in Karimadom Colony alone. 1250 persons residing in the colony are now placed in relief camps. They have lost their property and houses.
Major losses were reported on the agriculture front too. Crops worth Rs 12 crore were destroyed in the rains. 148 hectares of land were also inundated. Road damages created a loss of around Rs 2.5 crore to the PWD department. Rs 4.5 lakh loss was reported due to losing domesticating animals.
