THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In order to restore confidence and assure safety to the North-East people, the Kerala government has decided to give ‘Onam festival Kits’ free of cost containing food provisions to migrant workers.“To encourage and assure safety to the people of the north-east, the Kerala government has decided to provide an Onam gift to the migrants,” stated Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, while talking to the reporters after a cabinet meeting.
The Chief Minister said that his government will not tolerate anybody to threaten and frighten the migrant workers. The Onam kit along with different food articles will be delivered through the Labour department. The state government has sanctioned an amount estimating Rs 10 crores for the cause, said the Kerala Chief Minister.
Chandy also assured Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi that the North-East workers will be provided full security and there is absolutely no need to worry about the issue. The kits are likely to be distributed from Aug 25, four days before the Onam festival that falls on Aug 29.
When asked about the Kerala based Popular Front of India (PFI) that was said to be indulging in sending SMS that triggered an exodus of workers from North-East states from Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, the Chief Minister said that his government is looking into the matter. “Definitely action will be taken against the person found to be guilty,” added Chief Minister Oommen Chandy.
In the past years, the state government has handed over such free Onam kits to the people who were below poverty line (BPL) Keralites.
“The Chief Minister will inaugurate the ceremony on Aug 25 at Kochi. The kits will be given to all migrant workers in their respective places. The kit that will be given to the North-East migrants will be the same as for the BPL category card holders,” said labour minister Shibu Baby John.
