Renowned architect Jayachandran passes away
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: One of the renowned architects of Kerala and the owner of consultancy firm Jayachandran Associates, A.K. Jayachandran passed away on Friday in Thiruvananthapuram at the age of 75. He has been under treatment at PRS Hospital here for old-age ailments.
His body would be kept at his residence ‘Vasishtam’ at Jawahar Nagar on Saturday from 7 am onwards for the public to pay homage. The body would be cremated at Shanthi Kavadam in Thycaud at 12 noon.
Born on 17 December, 1938 in Tellicherry, A.K. Jayachandran got his Degree in Civil Engineering from College of Engineering, Thiruvananthapuram in 1961. He started his career as Architect in PWD department. After a few years, he left Government service as the Chief Architect of Kerala State Film Development Corporation and Handicrafts Board to start his own architectural firm - Jayachandran, Muralee & Associates. He has been practicing as an architect for more than 45 years. He was also an avid speaker and a visiting faculty at CET.
His other major works are South India’s first Water Theme Park - Kishkinta in Chennai and Kerala’s first major high rise residential apartments in Trivandrum for SI Properties. His architecture showed deep respect for the traditions of the region and for nature by celebrating light, cross ventilation and landscape within the spaces. The trademarks of his design focused on efficient use of space and material, connection with nature, optimizing functional space, and aesthetics with a conscientious to budget. His works in the field of community living has transformed the urban landscape of Kerala.
Jayachandran had been the principal architect for over 4,000 apartment units, 3.2 million sq. ft of Information Technology space, 4.5 million sq. ft of Industrial space and 1.5 million sq. ft of Commercial and Retail spaces spread across various cities in South India.
