Explosive substances seized

 
KANNUR:  Excise and sales tax departments recovered 300 kg of ammonium nitrate, 1000 detonators and 16 rolls of fuse wires from a pick-up jeep at Kuttupuzha check-post in Kiliyanthara on the border with Karnataka Friday and arrested two people in this connection.

According to excise sources, the explosive substances were recovered during a routine raid at the check-post around 0600 hrs. The explosives were kept under vegetable bags, in the jeep coming from Mysore. The ammonium nitrate was kept in six bags while the detonators were packed in ten packets. Excise officials led by Inspector Rejimon arrested two people, the driver T Ranjith (35) of Kallerikara and M P Bilu (30) of Elambra near Mattanur in this district. The excise department handed over the explosives and the two arrested people to Iritty police. The explosives would be defused by a bomb squad later, police said.
