Sree Padmanabhaswamy temple secret chambers opened

Friday, July 01, 2011: The treasure trove of gold, silver, diamonds and precious stones estimated at Rs 50,000 crore that was unearthed from secret chambers in Sree Padmanabhaswamy temple here, will be stored in the temple vaults itself.
This was informed by the seven-member committee, appointed by the Supreme Court to take an inventory of the six vaults. The panel further informed that the exact value of the treasure trove will not be revealed. The inventory of the vault-A will be completed within one week’s time.
Valuables worth Rs 20,000 crore were found after the examination of vault-A on Thursday. The valuables include around 2000 gold chains, diamond studded crowns, gold bars, idols, coins, etc.
The court direction to prepare the inventory came following a public interest litigation moved by T P Sundara Rajan, who sought greater transparency and accountability in the management of the centuries-old temple, now controlled by a trust of the Travancore Royal family, ruler of the erstwhile Travancore state.
The magnificent temple, known for its architectural elegance and long rows of granite columns with exquisite engravings, has Lord Vishnu reclining on the thousand-headed serpent Anantha as the presiding deity.
The temple is run by a trust floated by Travnacore royal house, to which Lord Padmanabha is the family deity.
The court issued orders on a private petition which sought measures for greater transparency and accountability in the management of the temple.
