Achuthanandan slams Govt move to hike bus fare

Tuesday, July 26, 2011: Leader of Opposition, VS Achuthanandan today lashed out at the state government for its decision to approve the expert committee’s proposal to hike the bus fare to Rs 5.
Speaking to the reporters here on Tuesday, VS added that the cabinet must withdraw its move to hike the minimum charge as it would be an extra burden for the public. For the fast passenger buses, the fare will go up to Rs 7. According to the fares approved by the cabinet, the minimum distance that can be travelled for minimum fare will be increased from 2.5 kilometers to five kilometers.
The decision is likely to be announced after the discussions to be held between the Transport Minister and the bus operators on Wednesday. The decision regarding the fare hike of students will be taken after the meeting.
