Fish workers to observe ”black day” on Aug 9

Thursday, July 28, 2011: The National Fish Workers Forum will observe Aug 9 as a ‘black day’ across the country to press various demands including measures to protect sea, harbours and the waterbodies from encroachers.
Fish workers would take out protest marches and sit-ins in different centres including Thiruvananthapuram, the Federation leaders said told press meet here. They said the country’s territorial sea both on the western and eastern coasts suffered huge degradation due to a host of factors including dumping of sewage.

It was the fishing community that was directly affected on account of this, they claimed. They wanted the Central government to include the fish industry in the National Action Plan of the Prime Minister and also to form a separate ministry for fisheries at the Centre.
